Dear Visitor to the BST Website,

Welcome to the British School Tripoli, Libya. Whether you are an existing family, a prospective family or are simply curious about what the British School Tripoli School represents and provides, I hope you find the following pages enjoyable and informative.

Libya is a fascinating country, which is going through tremendous change. Since the lifting of sanctions the rise in expatriate growth has been enormous. It is a safe and friendly country which is striving forward in every area.

The British School has been in operation since 1968 and was originally set up by The British Embassy, for its diplomatic children. The school has long since become self-financing and self-governing, with an elected parent body representing the Management Committee. The British Ambassador remains as the patron of the school.

The school has recently undergone significant development due to the continued rise in student numbers; which have more than doubled over the past four years. As part of our continued development we have expanded beyond the primary years for the first time in the school's history and now accommodate Years 7 and 8, with Year 9 to be added in September 2010. In January we renovated an additional building to separately accommodate children from Years 5 to Year 9; allowing us to have a second Nursery, Reception and Year 1 class in the original building. The new building includes teaching rooms, a Key Stage 3 library, Art/DT room, language room, gymnasium and a separate courtyard.

The school follows the English National Curriculum and administers UK tests to children at Year 2 and Year 6. All our class teachers are UK trained and are very well supported by a large number of support staff. We currently have over 30 nationalities of children, of whom all must be proficient in English before entering the school. The cultural diversity in the school allows for a cosmopolitan and rich atmosphere and learning environment where all children are encouraged to respect each other and work together.

We are members of The British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) organisation, which currently has over 90 British schools as members. The organisation assists us with links to the UK for training and development and holds a conference each year based on current UK educational initiatives. We have also recently been  accredited by IAPS (Independent Association of Preparatory Schools), and become one of only a handful of  schools outside of the UK to gain this distinguished accolade.

To further enhance  our links with the UK we have set up a link with 'School Improvement Partners' in England. As part of this initiative we were inspected in 2007 by a UK registered inspection team. We were delighted to be graded as a 'very good' school overall and one which provides a very good quality of education. The quality of teaching and learning was judged to be consistently very good and underpins the high quality of education offered. The inspection was an important part in our development and after such recent growth it showed that our standards have remained at the highest level and in line with the best performing schools in England.

We strongly believe that links with the parents and wider community are what makes the school the success it is. Links inside and outside the classroom with parents allow us to foster relationships and build a sense of trust and team work within all we do. As such we encourage parental involvement within the class and encourage productive dialogue in order to help us to give the best to the children in our care.

I hope this brief introduction to the school has proved helpful. Please take the time to browse our site, which will continue to be developed. Please remember, however, that there is no substitute for coming in to see us and experiencing the wonderful atmosphere that makes The British School Tripoli the excellent school that it is.

Best regards,

Iain Colledge
